About Life

Keeps me thinking about few things and I think I have few answers on how the course is. Like a River -  same river, easy & tough terrains and still freshwater always. Anytime there is stagnant, it starts stinking. So I feel being river is good. Same name and body, new thoughts and experiences every time, and most important Flow at Will.

Onsite Experience

I joined smartData on 28th June 2007. Roughly it is 6 years and 10 months since my first day. Every day a new day, mistakes, failures, wins, highs and lows, its has all been there in since then. Now, I see I am on my 7th overseas trip in this time, and 6 of them to Australia and 1 to Singapore. Numbers are sometimes every interesting when you start relating it to incidents in life - 6 years - 6 trips to Australia.

Any oversea trip of any person from a organisation shows 2 things - Faith of the management on the individual, and the Responsibility s/he has to carry on. It is good and makes me confident as well as nervous at times. With new people around here, I do try to pick up things on their culture, their business & work ethics, work styles and all. It has been a learning always, but I always try & wish to pass on the good work habits to team back home.

Initially first few days was hard purely because suddenly started to miss the society. No one to talk around. It was quite all around. Suddenly I even realised that the dog I used to curse every morning due to his barks, was being missed.  Luckily, I met few people at office and around and things started to settle down. It’s still quite as it used to be socially, but the few people around and you feel good about it.

Another interesting feeling which took time to soak into, suddenly all around are foreigners :). But then a sense of excitement helped to overcome these initial thoughts. Saw it as a new group of people, not just a single culture but multiple cultures to learn and get the good things. Not just a single community into business but people from many different coming out here for work & business.

Slowly started embracing things and it turned out to be turning out as a second home. It sometimes is hard on special occasions,  but things started to turn out when life gets busy.

Few tips for everyone who will travel abroad:
1. Socialise with local people. They are normal humans like us, just different language & culture.
2. Learn directions even if you don't need to travel that much. You won’t ever feel lost.
3. Explore the city and the country.
4. Embrace the good and the bad.
5. Stay Positive always

6. Most important - be straight in your conversation.

1 Minute Rule

I am quite lazy person and often delay small things... Lately I started to realize, that these smaller things pile up & then I need to take quite good time for getting them done.

So on a suggestion from some Online Good Soul, who made a great post on 1-minute work, I have started working on this 1-minute Rule.

Rule says - anything which is going to take less than a minute to do, do it right away. Acknowledging an Email, or Sending a important message, or even putting items at places. It saves time, keeps peace of mind and makes life easy :)

Experience in Life - 1

During my first overseas trip,  I had to take a train and I was to buy a ticket, the ticket counter person asked me,  “Single”, I smiled and said Yes (I was recently married :) ). On my second instance (and last train for the first overseas trip), the same question was asked. I could not resist and said , “No, Married”. The lady could not stop smiling, as she meant Single =  “Single trip” or I wanted a round trip.

It was a big learning, as a round trip always saves a 20%-30% on the ticket costs.

Life is Illusion

Importance of Voice MailBox

As a global person, we must have across situations when we are calling our clients or prospects and all we get into is a Voice Mailbox.  Though I have seen many sales people leaving their messages and follow up next. But this is something missing from people from technical or other departments. I am not saying they do not do it, but the proportion is lower than compared to sales.

This is sometimes easy to be forgiven, as what we can think of how does it matter. It does, and the only think which we do here is - not communicating properly.

See it this way. Your client or prospect is a human being. Like any other human being, s/he also gets all those annoying calls from bank representatives for Credit Card, or s/he is busy driving and can be fined for taking the call while driving. Consider this, you call someone and you get into a voice mailbox. What does it mean? You will all say, s/he is busy to take the call. But what you miss is, the person has set up voice mailbox as s/he also wants to attend to all calls which could not be attended for one reason or another.

I myself get many calls from many who have called, but no voice message. I do not respond to those unless I know the person from my Contacts list. But I do listen to all voicemails I get. Then it depends on me if I want to reply or not. Same way I think my client or prospect will do.

If I hear a voice message, I would like to know 3 things - WHO called, WHY s/he called, and WHEN can I get back to the caller. And I do the same when I call someone and get to a voice mailbox.

Technology is changing fast, but human interaction through voice is still the best mode of communication. Catch on to it, as only a voice can exert the emotion, urgency and all other stuff which text communication cannot.

So next time you reach a voice mailbox, do leave a message. Don’t wait for the person to get back to you but follow up the other day or so.

Small thing but surely adds on to your communication Skill.

Easy Words, Tough Meaning

Two things I have heard and learnt in life, that are easier to write or say but very hard to follow:

1. Be Yourself
2. Keep Simple
